Why portraits?
In the summer 2010, The Malahat Review asked Chelsea to take some photos of the launch, and so she photographed and also drew reader portraits of her own accord. The portraits were posted on the Malahat’s Facebook page and she’s been asked back to every launch since for the same purpose. Some of these portraits have already been purchased (including the above Patrick Lane) and all of them are well on their way to becoming collector’s items. Find yourselves, find your friends, find your idols, and hang them on the wall for posterity (and a little silliness).
Why cards?
The first time Chelsea was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she was maybe five or so, and she did not say Writer or Artist or Dancer even thought she was already doing all of those things. She said Greeting Card Designer. Since then handmade cards by Chelsea have passed into the hands and hearts of her friends, classmates, family members, and teachers whenever an occasion called for one. Now she goes to production. You might call it a childhood dream coming true.
While the cards reproduce Chelsea’s original drawings, paintings, and collages, each card is unique by way of Chelsea’s printing process, which she executes herself and which makes use of many colourful elements beyond the focal image. They delight and bewilder those who gift the card and those who receive it, which has been Chelsea’s goal all along: a little bit of confusion, and then
joy.
